Police identify woman killed in shooting on South Bend’s southeast side
SOUTH BEND, Ind. (WNDU) - Police have identified the woman who was killed in a shooting on South Bend’s southeast side on Saturday night as 37-year-old Kristina Ortiz of South Bend.
The shooting happened around 8 p.m. in the 500 block of Wenger Street near Southeast Park, the YWCA and the Boys & Girls Cubs.
Police say Ortiz died at the scene. Her autopsy was conducted on Monday in Kalamazoo.
One woman who lives in the neighborhood was not home at the time of the shooting but received a chilling phone call from her daughter who was.
“Initially from my daughter calling me on the phone there was an instant panic but also trying to remain calm so she can remain calm and just tell her what to do to stay safe,” she recalled. “The first thing I said was get on the ground and stay on the ground, get under the bed, and that was quite alarming. And I was on my way home and she said, ‘Oh, I’m leaving mom.’
“That could have been me, you or anyone walking down the street, you know,” she added. “I just walked my grandkids, granddaughter a few days ago down to the park.”
