Indiana bill would add bobcats to hunted animal list
INDIANAPOLIS (WNDU) - A bill moving through the Indiana Legislature seeks to add bobcats to the list of hunted animals in the Hoosier state.
Senate Bill 241 would give the DNR until July 1, 2025, to adopt rules, license fees, and bag limits.
The bill’s author says he would envision such a hunt taking place in southern and southwest Indiana, south of I-70, where the bobcat population has been increasing.
“I think they’re a majestic creature that I want to see continue in Indiana but yes, they are 100% a apex predator; in Indiana, aside from humans they will predate on deer, turkeys cotton tail, all of the small game, if it’s a live and slower than them they’ll eat it,” said Sen. Scott Baldwin, R-Noblesville.
Indiana would join Iowa, Illinois, Kentucky, and Michigan in establishing a bobcat season.
