MICHIGAN CITY, Ind. (WNDU) - Flaherty & Collins Properties, alongside Michigan City Mayor Angie Nelson Deuitch and community leaders, gathered at the Franklin at 11th Street Station on Thursday to break ground on a $101 million mixed-use development site.

The new development will bring 220 new apartments and 5,600 square feet of commercial space.

Additional features include parking and easy access to the South Shore Line for residents and visitors, making it convenient for them to travel to Chicago or South Bend.

“Now you can live here. Rather than commuting from Chicago out, now you can live here and commute in to Chicago. That’s a very important distinction,” said Skyler York, director of planning and redevelopment for Michigan City. “We’re not just the playground anymore — we’re actually the place where you lay your head and you enjoy our downtown, our beachfronts and now we have downtown living options. It’s a great community, and the proximity is what I think now makes it even better.”

The apartments, spanning 12 stories, will offer various layouts including studio, one-bedroom, two-bedroom, and three-bedroom floorplans. Each unit will boast modern amenities such as 1 GB internet service, LED lighting, steel appliances, full-size washer and dryer, and private balconies.

“We’re going through a period of revitalization. We’re calling it our renaissance period, where we’re reimagining what Michigan City will look like,” said Mayor Deuitch. “I think having this new parking garage and having this new mixed-use development and being in our transit development district is spurring growth throughout the city.”

Officials expect to welcome the first residents and commercial tenants by the fall of 2025.
