SOUTH BEND, Ind. (WNDU) - Work is getting started on a new apartment development in South Bend that seems to have the bases covered when it comes to integration and inclusion.

The first building is called “Diamond View Apartments” because it’s right across the street from the baseball diamond at Four Winds Field. Groundbreaking ceremonies were held Thursday,

When the four-story building is complete about a year from now, 12 of the 60-apartments will be set aside for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

“Inclusion is about much more than just where people live. It’s about working side by side with the rest of us going to the same parks, enjoying the same amenities that a community has to offer,” said Matt Harrington, with LOGAN Community Resources. “LOGAN’s always been about inclusion, and this is just one more step in that direction.”

The Diamond View building will house low-income tenants and plans call for a second building with 90-apartments that will rent at market rate.

The complex will also bring together people of mixed financial means.
