(WNDU) - Former South Bend mayor and current Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg will be back in his home state this week.

Buttigieg is expected to tour the construction site of a future EV battery manufacturing plant in Kokomo on Friday. According to our sister station WTHR, the plant was announced last October by Stellantis N.V. and Samsung SDI.

The visit will be part of a Midwest tour in which Buttigieg highlights President Biden’s “Investing in America” agenda. He will begin the trip with stops in in Wisconsin and the Upper Peninsula of Michigan before making his way to the Hoosier State.

The tour comes amid speculation that he could be Kamala Harris’ vice presidential candidate. While Harris has not officially locked up the Democratic Party’s presidential nomination, she’s viewed as the “more than likely” candidate after having reportedly secured enough support from delegates to become the nominee.

A recent PBS News/NPR/Marist poll showed Buttigieg tied with Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer at the top of the list for who people want to see as the Democratic vice presidential candidate.

Buttigieg seemingly suggested in an interview with MSNBC earlier this week that he would be open to being Harris’ running mate but said that it’s not his priority at the moment. He also said he trusts whatever VP choice she makes for the party.
