SOUTH BEND, Ind. (WNDU) - With school starting up in just 10 days for South Bend Community School Corporation students, transportation has been on the mind of many parents.

And with the 2024-25 school year upon us, SBCSC administrators held a meeting to discuss the new academic year.

And while transportation wasn’t on the agenda for Monday night’s school board meeting at LaSalle Academy, issues like concerns over bus transportation eligibility letters were addressed.

“Generally, you don’t send those letters out until you roll over,” said Dr. Sarita Sevens, deputy superintendent for SBCSC. “The process is called rollover, the student records from the previous school year to the next school year. Because that gives you much better information. Those letters went out a little earlier than they were supposed to, which caused a technical glitch in the system, so those letters are to be disregarded.”

While a computer glitch caused one problem, school corporation officials wanted to address another rumor of new boundary lines for SBCSC schools, which officials say is not the case.

“So, the boundaries will not change,” Dr. Stevens said. “We just want to make sure everyone knows what the boundaries are because sometimes word of mouth can turn into a different story.”

And with the first day of school right around the corner, the district says it’s are ready to pick up its students.

“We’re using our current drivers, and we also have contracted drivers,” Dr. Stevens said. “They are independent drivers. So, there’s 16 of them that have always been a part of our transportation process.”

To fight the rumor mill, SBCSC officials recommend reaching out to the corporation’s website or hotline number at 574-393-7000.
