MISHAWAKA, Ind. (WNDU) - There’s one more homeowner in Mishawaka tonight thanks to Habitat for Humanity!

This build was led by a familiar face here in Michiana: the one and only, Muffet McGraw. It was built by women for a woman.

Terrie Dixon is a first-time homeowner at the age of 60. With the help of Habitat for Humanity, Muffet McGraw, and the community, she is showing others that it’s never too late.

“I’m overwhelmed and I’m just in disbelief,” Dixon said. “My latter will be greater than my former, that’s what the word of God says so it’s all in his timing, so this is God good for me.”

In between her job at Beacon, Dixon took classes on home ownership and invested what Habitat calls “sweat equity,” meaning she even helped build her own home.

“Just found out I went over, I think 250 was required and I did 280,” Dixon said.

Located at The Fields at Highland in Mishawaka, this house was built over the past several months as part of the Muffet McGraw Women Build.

McGraw could not make it to the key ceremony, but she did send a video. The former head basketball coach leads a team of all-women volunteers that included our own Tricia Sloma.

“It’s helping our families with stability and the future,” said Habitat for Humanity Director of Community Relations Jill La Fountain. “This is something that Terrie is building equity in this house. She’s not just paying rent anymore, it’s not just money out the door, it’s not going to someone else. She’s building equity in that house for her future.”

Not only does Dixon have a new home thanks to Habitat, but she’s also got a fridge full of food thanks to the Indiana Food Bank and Cultivate Food Rescue.
