THREE OAKS, Mich. (WNDU) - The Village of Three Oaks is no longer providing police services to Three Oaks Township, but residents are being assured that the township still has police coverage.

According to our reporting partners at The Herald-Palladium, the village received a letter from the township several months ago stating that the township was opting out of the police agreement. In turn, the village stopped providing police services to the township on Jan. 1.

Dan Faulkner, manager of Three Oaks, told The Herald-Palladium village police will no longer be patrolling in the township or handling ordinance issues like complaints of blight. Village police will still respond to emergencies in the township, but only if they are available.

Officials say the Berrien County Sheriff’s Office and Michigan State Police will now respond to emergencies in the township.

“Just like with any other township that doesn’t have police protection – us and the state police will cover it,” Berrien County Sheriff Chuck Heit told The Herald-Palladium. “We will cover it with our general patrol. Obviously, surrounding agencies will always assist in an emergency.”

If you live in Three Oaks Township and need police assistance, you’re asked to call the Berrien County Public Safety Dispatch’s non-emergency number at 1-866-630-7679. According to a post on the village’s Facebook page, this will connect you with the Berrien County Sheriff’s Office or Michigan State Police.

If it’s an emergency, call 911.
