Michiana officials urge work zone safety amid National Work Zone Awareness Week
ST. JOSEPH COUNTY, Ind. (WNDU) - This week is National Work Zone Awareness Week, and Michiana officials are teaming up to make work zones safer.
On Monday, representatives from INDOT teamed up with St. Joseph County police and Indiana State Police to stress the importance of driving safely in work zones.
In 2024, there were 7,000 crashes, 115 hundred injuries and 30 deaths caused by unsafe driving in work zones across the state of Indiana.
This year, officials are asking us not to cause such numbers.
“There’s a lot of guys wearing these bright, [high visibility] vests and coats,” says Sgt. Aris Lee with the traffic division of the St. Joseph County Police Department. They’re out here trying to work, get the roadway in better shape. At the end of the day, they just want to go home, just like everybody else does.”
