Intersection of Prairie Avenue and Grant Street temporarily renamed to honor Samuel Diggins Sr.
SOUTH BEND, Ind. (WNDU) - As the saying goes, “Heroes get remembered, but legends never die.”
One South Bend legend is being honored for his life of service.
Mayor James Mueller, along with South Bend council members and community leaders, came together on Wednesday for the honorary street renaming for Samuel Diggins Sr.
This is at the intersection of Prairie Avenue and Grant Street.
Diggins served for the South Bend Community School Corporation for 17 years before moving into a life in ministry. He became a pastor of Believers Church of God in Christ, where he served for 36 years.
Our team spoke with the family of Diggins on the legacy he left behind.
“We can see that he left a good legacy. And it’s in our hearts to take it on and we know that’s what he would desire. And we just thank God that we have people that are doing that right now. Just taking his legacy on,” said Ruth Diggins, the wife of Samuel Diggins Sr.
Diggins is remembered by his wife Ruth, their children, their 20 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and 8 great-great grandchildren.
