LAPORTE COUNTY, Ind. (WNDU) - The semi driver who died in a crash on the Indiana Toll Road Thursday has been identified as 60-year-old Robert Bluitt of Camden, N.J.

The crash happened just before noon central time in the westbound lanes of the toll road in LaPorte County, about a half mile east of the LaPorte exit (Exit 49).

Investigators say Bluitt was driving a semi and towing a box trailer. He was heading west when he apparently lost control of the vehicle. The truck eventually flipped on its side and slid more than 200 feet before coming to rest.

Police say Bluitt died at the scene.

The crash temporarily shut down both directions of traffic, with backups stretching for miles.
