Police identify 19-year-old killed in South Bend crash after he fled from police
SOUTH BEND, Ind. (WNDU) - Officials have identified the 19-year-old driver who died from his injuries in a single-car crash on Tuesday night at a familiar intersection in South Bend as Jacob Hoggatt of LaPorte.
Police say it all started when they received a shots fired call around 10:15 p.m. in the 700 block of S. Michigan Street.
Officers located the suspect vehicle and pulled it over. While the car initially stopped, investigators say it drove off and went west on Western Avenue.
The car eventually crashed at the intersection of W. Western Avenue and S. Walnut Street under the railroad overpass.
Hoggatt was taken to the hospital, where he later died. Police say he was the only person in the car.
The intersection of Western and Walnut was closed for several hours after the crash, which remains under investigation by the St. Joseph County Fatal Crash Team.
